Mrs. Dorlies Jean Van Hoose (better known as Dottie) was born in Estill, KY, on July 17, 1932, to Ephram and Julie Bell Edwards. Her siblings included Evelyn and Melvin, Lloyd (spouse, Vera), Bruce (spouse, Ruth), Ella Rose (spouse, Raymond Lafftery), and Cecil (spouse, Margaret). Dottie attended Wayland High School in Wayland, KY and graduated in 1950. She grew up in the hills of Eastern KY at the mouth of Martin Branch Holler and was a true coal miners’ daughter. Her father worked in the coal mines his whole life providing for her and her three brothers and one sister. She was preceded in death by her mom, dad, two brothers and her sister. She is survived by her brother, Cecil and sister-in-law, Margaret.
Dottie married Bill Van Hoose on September 6, 1952, after Bill returned from the Army. After they married, they initially lived in KY. They settled in Ohio where they started their family. Together they had five children, Ron (spouse, Pam), Tom, Kathy (spouse,Frank-deceased), Gary (spouse, Cindy) and Becky (spouse, Gary). She worked as a hotel housekeeper for many years after her children were in high school. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill whom she was married to for over 50 years.
Mrs. Dottie loved to cook and can foods, especially for family. The family reunions were always a highlight for her each year. She loved being with all her cousins, aunts, uncles, and their children. Her favorite role was being a parent and grandparent. She was a grandmother to ten, Brandon, Jennifer, Jon, Sarah, Clint, Mindy, Boe, Lara, Jarrod, and Adam. Great-grandmother to thirteen, Jacob, Logan, Walker, Millie, Bowen, Ethan, Avery, Jordyn, Bella, Jonathan II, Zoe, Tyler, and Bryson. She treasured her time with the grandkids and great grandkids and loved being Grandma Dot.
Dottie was always there for anyone in the family or anyone that needed help or a friend. She was a loving Aunt to her many nephews and nieces. She loved her nieces and nephews as much as her own children. She was a devout Christian and showed God’s love and compassion to everyone. Her most recent church in Arizona was The Free Will Baptist church in San Tan Valley, Arizona.
Dottie will always be remembered for her love of family and the support she gave to her family. We could not have asked for a better mom, and we will miss her deeply everyday. Her memory will be etched in and live on in the hearts of all that knew her.
